Deanna Resmondo doubled down the right field line to score Kelly Smith in the top of the eighth inning to help Samford overcome a 2-0 deficit and defeat Gardner-Webb 3-2 in eight innings Sunday afternoon in the completion of Saturday's Atlantic Sun double-header.
Gardner-Webb (11-27, 2-12 A-Sun) jumped on top in the bottom of the third inning when Stephanie Scrum singled home Jennifer Wallace with the game's first run. In the fourth, Rachael Riopel hit a solo home run to left field to give the home-standing Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
The Samford (20-11, 6-4 A-Sun) bats woke up in the top of the sixth inning as the visiting Bulldogs scored two runs on five straight hits to tie the game. Smith started the rally with her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field. Abi Casillo singled and scored on Resmondo's first double of the game to tie the game at two. Resmondo was thrown out at third base on the play. Bridget Smith singled in front of Trisha Holman's hit to the fence, Smith was thrown out at the plate to end the inning and send the game to extra innings for the second straight day.
Smith doubled with one out in the top of the eighth in front of Resmondo's second double of the game. Smith was 2-3 on the day with an RBI and two runs scored. Resmondo was 3-4 with two RBI and Holman went 2-4 for Samford.
Erin Landsburg picked up her second win of the weekend in relief to improve to 10-6 on the season. Landsburg pitched 1.2 innings giving up one hit and fanning three. Emilee Lewis pitched the first 6.1 innings, giving up seven hits, two runs, walking one, and striking out two. Susan Frank took the loss for Gardner-Webb in relief falling to 1-5.
Samford will return home on Tuesday to face Atlantic Sun rival Jacksonville State in a double header that begins at 4 p.m. at Bulldog Field.
