Softball Splits with Jax State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Deanna Resmondo hit a grand slam and Michelle Wright followed with her eighth home run of the season to highlight a five-run third inning as Samford took game two from Jacksonville State 9-5 to salvage a split in its Atlantic Sun double header on Wednesday.

Samford's (21-12, 7-5 A-Sun) nine runs in game two are the most given up by Jacksonville State (30-6, 6-4 A-Sun) this season. The Bulldogs are now 10-1 at home this season.

Jax State took the opening game 6-1. Becky Carpenetti had a two-out two-RBI single in the second inning on a 0-2 pitch to put JSU up 2-0. Veronica Davis made the runs hold up as she gave up one run on five hits and struck out eight to improve to 12-3 on the year.

Samford pulled to within 2-1 on Kelly Smith's second double of the game that scored Sarah Godfrey who doubled to lead off the Bulldog sixth. Smith now has a conference leading 16 doubles on the season. JSU answered with a four-run seventh to provide the final margin of victory. Annie Davis and Breanne Oleman had RBI singles and a Samford error allowed two unearned runs to score. Erin Landsburg took the loss in game one for Samford to fall to 10-7 on the season.

JSU jumped ahead 2-0 in game two as Janae Bonin hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Samford cut the lead in half in the second when Abi Casillo singled home Smith.

In the home half of the third, Erin Hall and Godfrey had back-to-back singles before a JSU error loaded the bases with one out. Resmondo hit her fifth home run of the year over the right field fence on a 1-2 pitch to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead. Wright hit the next pitch over the left field fence providing the Bulldogs first back-to-back home runs of the season.

Samford added two more runs in the fourth inning to make the score 8-2. Godfrey had a RBI-single to score Angela Bednark and Smith's RBI-ground out plated Trisha Holman. Jax State scored a run in the top of the sixth on a Melinda McDonald RBI-single that scored Allie Simons. The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the innings as Godfrey reached on a two-base error and moved to third on a wild pitch. She would score on Smith's second RBI-ground out of the game.

The Gamecocks scored two unearned runs in the seventh on a two-RBI double by Simons that plated Davis and Oleman. Emilee Lewis picked up the win for Samford throwing seven innings giving up three earned runs and fanning four to improve to 8-4 on the year. Tara Ross lasted only 3.1 innings as she dropped to 14-3 on the season.

Samford will be back in action on Friday at 4 p.m. as the Bulldogs host Stetson in another Atlantic Sun double header at Bulldog Field.
