Tim Burgess hit a walk-off three-run home run in game two and the Panthers scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth in game one as Georgia State swept the doubleheader from Samford, 8-6, and 10-7. Georgia State (25-25, 16-14 A-Sun) swept the series from the Bulldogs (16-34, 7-23 A-Sun).
Romas Hicks (2-0) picked up the win in relief allowing one earned run on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. Robert Evans (0-3) was credited with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings. Ehren Wassermann held GSU to two earned runs on six hits in five innings. Heath Owen led Samford going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Owen finished the series 5-for-10 with five RBI. Michael Collins also added two hits in game two. Rusty Bennett led the Panthers going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kyle Breitback finished the game 3-for-3 for the Panthers.
Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers scored seven runs for the win. After Robert Evans got Mike Buchanan to foul out to first base. Kyle Breitbach and Kevin Kawasaki singled back-to-back. Sean Fitzgerald's two-run double brought Georgia State within 7-5. After Dustin Phillips singled putting runners on the corner, Bennett singled to right field scoring Fitzgerald as GSU trailed 7-6. Stephen Burroughs' RBI single to center field tied the game, 7-7. With runners on the corners and two outs, Burgess homered to right field to end the game.
The Bulldogs broke open the game in the top of the seventh with four runs. Eric Hollis and Jeff Dils each singled. After Michael Collins reached on an error loading the bases, Hollis scored on a wild pitch giving the Bulldogs a 4-3 advantage. After Robert Evans was intentionally walked loading the bases with one out, Heath Owen drilled a double to right field clearing the bases for a 7-3 Samford lead.
Samford took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Michael Collins doubled to right center and scored on Robert Evans' sacrifice fly.
Bennett's RBI single down the left field line gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Panthers tied the game on Dustin Phillips' RBI double.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs tied the game. Robert Evans singled, Owen walked and Richard Bishop reached on a fielder's choice. Sae Evans singled in two runs tying the game, 3-3.
The Panthers outhit Samford, 14-9, in the contest. Kawasaki, Fitzgerald and Phillips each had two hits.
In game one, Georgia State scored five runs with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 8-6 win.
Isaac Haynes (1-1) picked up the win in relief. Haynes held the Bulldogs scoreless through 1 2/3 innings on two hits. Jonatha Craig started the game and allowed six runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. Wassermann (4-8) suffered the loss in relief allowing three runs in 2/3 innings. Stephen Artz worked 5 1/3 innings allowing five runs in six hits and striking out five. Heath Owen and Sae Evans each went 3-for-4 for Samford. Fitzgerald and Phillips both led the Panthers with two hits.
Samford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Sae Evans singled and moved to second on a balk. Kip Snowden and Joe Denson each grounded out scoring Sae Evans.
Owen's RBI single and Sae Evans' RBI doubled stretch the Bulldog lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth. Georgia State came within 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth. After Stephen Burroughs and Justin Newman singled back-to-back with two outs, Tim Burgess doubled down the left field line.
Justin Klinger's two-run single in the top of fifth highlighted a three-run inning. Robert Evans was hit by a pitch to bring home a run as Samford led 6-2. Phillips' RBI single in the bottom of the inning brought GSU within 6-3.
The Panthers posted five runs in the bottom of the sixth for the come from behind win. Kawasaki had a two-run single down the left-field line. Phillips' infield single and a throwing error by Joe Denson at shortstop brought home two runs putting the Panthers ahead 7-6. Bennett's RBI double made for the final GSU run.
Samford wraps up its season with four home games next week. The Bulldogs host cross-town rival UAB Tuesday. Samford plays its final Atlantic Sun Conference Series next weekend against Mercer.
