Sae Evans' Three Homers Lead Baseball by Blazers, 7-4

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - - Sae Evans hit a career-best three home runs and Frank Allen Yeilding, Ehren Wassermann and Stephen Artz combined to strike out 11 as Samford knocked off cross-town rival UAB, 7-4. The Bulldogs (17-34) and Blazers (24-26) split the season series.

Wassermann (5-8) picked up the win in relief allowing two runs on three hits in two innings. Yeilding gave up two runs on three hits in five innings while striking out seven. Artz earned his second save of the season holding the Blazers scoreless on one hit in two innings and striking out three. Ryan Huffman (1-1) took the loss for UAB allowing five runs in 6 1/3 innings.

The three home runs by Sae Evans gave him seven on the season giving him the team lead. He entered the contest with four homers on the season.

Kyle Leon's RBI single staked UAB to the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Samford answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame. Robert Evans singled and stole second. Justin Klinger's single to center field scored Robert Evans tying the game, 1-1.

Sae Evans' two-run home run to deep center field put Samford ahead, 3-1, in the bottom of the second.

Kyle Leon's two-run home run tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the sixth. Eugene Rodriguez's leadoff solo home run to left field gave UAB a 4-3 lead. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. Sae Evans led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run of his own, tying the game once more, 4-4. Michael Collins' double to right center scored Joe Denson, who walked, putting Samford back on top, 5-4. Robert Evans followed with an RBI single scoring Collins as Samford led, 6-4.

Sae Evans' third home run of the game put the Bulldogs ahead, 7-4, in the bottom of the eighth.

Sae Evans finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Robert Evans went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Collins, Eric Hollis, Kip Snowden and Denson each added one hit. Kyle Leon led UAB going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

The Bulldogs wrap up their season this weekend when they host Mercer for Senior weekend in Samford's final Atlantic Sun Conference Series.
