Samford and Western Carolina Pick Up Wins in Afternoon Session

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford and Western Carolina each picked up victories in the afternoon session of the Union State Bank/Samford Invitational. Western Carolina took a 3-0 win over UAB in the early match while Samford won 3-1 over South Alabama.

Alyssa Whitehead led the Bulldogs with her second straight double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs. Hilary Gary added 12 kills and Brooke Berryman contributed 10 kills. Freshman Allison Pickett made her first career start and recorded 45 assists and 12 digs. Callaway Logan also had 12 digs for the Bulldogs.

Samford won the first two games 30-28 and 30-24. South Alabama (1-5) responded with a 30-28 victory in game four. Lacey Stejskal led four Jaguars in double-figures with 16 kills. Morgan Flarity had 14 kills, Kim Courchesne 13 kills, and Summer Pilgram 11 kills.

South Alabama had 14 service errors and eight ball handling errors in the match. Samford out dug USA 57-53 and out blocked the Jags. 10-7.

In the early match, Kellyn Thaut led Western Carolina (5-3) with 11 kills and 12 digs. Martina Shields led UAB (2-7) with nine kills and 14 digs.

In the final matches of the day, Western Carolina will face South Alabama at 3 p.m. and Samford and UAB will wrap up the tournament at 5:30 p.m.
