TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
The Samford Women's Golf Teams' opening round of the 2003 season at the University of Alabama/Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate was suspended due to heavy rain and lightning while the Bulldogs still had several golfers still on the course. Scores from the first round will not be posted until all the teams have concluded play, however the Bulldogs are struggling out of the gate.
"We have not played as well as we had hoped coming in," Head Coach Ian Thompson said. "If we finished last and played well I would not have been disappointed because of the quality of the competition. However, none of the ladies played a good opening round. You don't forget how to play golf overnight and I am disappointed because our scores are going to be real high."
The Bulldogs and several other teams will finish the first round at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow morning at the Capstone Club of Tuscaloosa. The second round will begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be shotgun format. With two rounds to go Coach Thompson still hopes for improvement from Samford as the tournament progresses.
"We all feel like we can improve on what we did today," Thompson said. "We are hopeful that we can play closer to our abilities as a team in the final two rounds. Everybody on the team has the potential to play better than what they did today. Usually everyone does not have a bad day on the same day, but that is just what happened to us today."
