Freshman forward Alex Munday scored a career-high 25 points, but it was not enough as the Samford women's basketball team fell to the Murray State Lady Racers, 71-61, in an Ohio Valley Conference contest in the Regional Special Events Center Thursday night.
Samford (7-6, 1-2 OVC) led most of the first half. The Bulldogs jumped on top early and pushed its lead to eight points at 16-8 on a three-pointer by Munday with 15:05 left in the first half. Murray State (5-9, 1-2 OVC) then answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to one at 16-15 with 12:37 to go on a jumper by Rebecca Remington. The game stayed tight for the remainder of the first half, with Murray State's Megan Fuqua hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lady Racers a 32-29 halftime lead.
Samford scored the first four points of the first half to take a 33-32 lead on a pair of free throws by Munday with 18:33 left in the game. MSU then took the lead back with an 11-5 run to give the Lady Racers a 43-38 lead. Samford then went on a 5-0 run of its own to tie the game at 43-43 on a jumper by Giovanni Price with 14:36 to go in the game.
MSU quickly took the lead back for good on a three-pointer by Jenny Bowden to make the score 46-43 at the 14:10 mark in the second half. Samford cut the lead to one at 46-45, but could get no closer the rest of the way. MSU slowly pulled away down the stretch to come away with the 71-61 win.
Following Munday for the Bulldogs, sophomore guard Chelsee Insell scored nine points and freshman Veronica Pike added eight.
Murray State was led by Brittany Park with 16 points, and Fuqua and Stacy Holmes with 15 each. Holmes also grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lady Racers.
Samford will return to action when the Bulldogs play at Tennessee-Martin on Saturday, Jan. 17. The game is set for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off in Martin, Tenn.
