BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Morehead State's Kandi Brown scored 27 points to lead the Lady Eagles' basketball team to a 67-54 win over Samford Thursday night in Seibert Hall.
Samford (8-8, 1-4 OVC) fell behind early as Morehead State (6-10, 3-2 OVC) jumped out to a 10-5 lead with 14:00 left in the first half on a jumper by Shelly Johnson. The Lady Eagles pushed their lead out to 11 at 23-12, with 9:00 left on a jumper by Patti White. Samford, however, closed the half with a 20-9 run to tie the game at 32-32 on a three-pointer by Morgan Vickery with 32 seconds left to give Samford the momentum going into halftime.
Samford jumped out to a 38-32 lead early in the second half on two three-pointers by Chelsee Insell. Morehead State then went on a 10-0 run to take the lead back at 42-38 with 13:45 to go in the game on a jumper by Brown. After Samford cut the lead to two at 42-40, Morehead State went on a 15-6 run to push its lead to 11 at 57-46 with 4:50 left in the contest on a free throw by Holly Williams. Samford could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Lady Eagles came away with the 67-54 win.
Insell scored 17 points, on 6-of-13 shooting, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, to lead Samford in scoring. Morgan Vickery scored 13 for the Bulldogs.
Behind Brown's 27 points, Megan Gearhart scored 12 points, and DeVonda Williams added 10 points and 15 rebounds for Morehead State.
Samford will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 24, when the Bulldogs play host to Eastern Kentucky. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., and will follow the men's game against Eastern Kentucky, which begins at 2:00 p.m. in Seibert Hall.
