BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over Southern Conference newcomer Tennessee Tech Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.

With the win, Samford is now 8-2-5 overall and 5-0-2 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs are now tied with Furman for first place in the league standings with three games to go. Tennessee Tech fell to 6-7-4 overall and 3-3-2 in league play.

"This was a typical Sunday afternoon game in the SoCon where it's just hard," Samford head coach Todd Yelton said. "To be honest that game Thursday night at Chattanooga took a lot out of us on that turf, so for us to come out and get two and score right off the bat, which I think you definitely want to do that with Tech, you don't want to play from behind. We're super happy with the three points. We'll enjoy today and then try to get ready for The Citadel when we'll head to Charleston on Friday."

Samford jumped on top early with a goal by Sam De Luca off assists from Lucy Corley and Langston Lilly in the third minute for a 1-0 Samford lead. The Bulldogs added a late goal when Brinley Murphy scored off an assist from Caroline Smith in the 74^th minute to make the score 2-0.

De Luca's goal was her team-leading sixth of the season, while Murphy's was her third of the campaign. Smith tallied her team-leading seventh assist on the year.

Goalkeeper Peyton Hull saved three shots without allowing a goal. The shutout was her SoCon-leading eighth of the season.

For Tennessee Tech, Ebba Melin led the team with two shots, both on goal. Goalkeeper Laila McNamee had four saves while allowing two goals.

Next up, Samford will play at The Citadel on Friday, Oct. 23. The game is set for a 3 p.m. (CT) start from Charleston, S.C.
