BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Ray Nelson completed 19-of-32 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns, and he rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries to lead Samford to a 34-20 Ohio Valley Conference victory over the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks Saturday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.
"We were in a position where we needed to get a win any way we could," Samford head coach Bill Gray. "It's great to finally get our first conference victory. I thought the kids played hard in the second half, it would have been very easy for us to fold the tent. I'm very proud of them."
Following Nelson for Samford, Philip Hyde rushed for a career-high 100 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Brad Booth and Calvin Hodge each had 10 tackles for the Bulldog defense.
"This was a big win for us," Nelson said. "It feels good to put a win on the board, and I think that should give the team a little more motivation to go out and try to do it again next week. The way we felt this afternoon in the locker room was a positive feeling and I think it should be a boost for the rest of the season."
