Oct. 24, 2004

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford senior quarterback Ray Nelson was named the Ohio Valley Conference's Offensive Player of the Week when the conference released its weekly honors on Sunday.

In Saturday's 42-36 overtime win at Tennessee State, Nelson compiled 457 yards of total offense. Nelson completed 27-of-42 passes for 348 yards and two touchdowns in the game. He also rushed for 109 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries.

Nelson scored the game's winning touchdown on a five-yard run in overtime. The game marks the third time this season that Nelson has rushed for over 100 yards and passed for over 200 yards in the same game. In addition to his rushing and passing totals, Nelson had one punt for 24 yards.

Nelson and the Bulldogs will look to win their third-straight game on Saturday, October 30, when they play host to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles for Samford's Homecoming game. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 2:00 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.
