Softball Wins Two Games In Day One Of Fall Tournament

Oct. 9, 2004

TRUSSVILLE, Ala. - The Samford University softball team concluded play in day one of the Diamond Pro Samford Fall Classic with a 2-1 record on Saturday as the Bulldogs fell to Wallace-Hanceville, 7-0, and then defeated both Gadsden State, 14-0, and Armstrong Atlantic, 2-1.

Samford's Susanna Meyer anchored the Bulldogs' pitching staff on Saturday as the talented sophomore tallied 14 strikeouts and only allowed three hits.

In Samford's second game of the tournament, Meyer pitched four scoreless innings against Gadsden State and registered four strikeouts. The native of Davie, Fla., only allowed one hit in the contest and picked up the win as the Bulldogs exploded for a lopsided 14-0 victory. Against Armstrong Atlantic, Meyer continued her stellar play with 10 strikeouts.

With Meyer's pitching performance versus Armstrong Atlantic, the Bulldogs were able to push across a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a thrilling 2-1 victory.

The score of the contest was knotted at 1-1 when Samford's Meghan Wagner led off the seventh frame with a single. The Bulldogs' freshman from Chico, Calif., was then sacrificed over to second base and later reached third on another Samford single. The Bulldogs then loaded the bases with an intentional walk and Wagner scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Samford's Bethany Weisser, Emily Deaux and Heather Williams turned in outstanding hitting performances on Saturday. Weisser finished the day with a 4-for-10 average and a double, while Deaux went 4-for-9 with a double and a home run. Williams concluded day one of the Diamond Pro Samford Fall Classic with a 3-for-7 average and a double.
