The Samford women's basketball team got off to a slow start and could not catch up as the Bulldogs fell at Eastern Kentucky, 64-48, in McBayer Arena Thursday night.
Samford (8-14, 1-10 OVC) went without a field goal for the first 7:25 of the game, with the team's first field goal coming on a layup by Chelsee Insell with 12:35 to go to cut the Eastern Kentucky (11-11, 7-4 OVC) lead to 17-3. EKU then scored the next four points to extend its lead to 21-3. With Samford trailing, 28-11 with 3:18 left in the first half, the Bulldogs closed the half with a 7-0 run make the score 28-18 at halftime.
The Lady Colonels opened the second half with an 8-0 run to increase their lead to 36-18, with 17:23 to go on a shot by Candis Cook. EKU maintained its lead until, with the Lady Colonels leading 37-21 with 14:59 to go, Samford went on a 16-3 run to make the score 40-37 with 9:56 to go on a put back by Alex Munday. However, EKU answered with a 9-1 run to push its lead back to 11 at 49-38 with 6:39 left in the game. Samford could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Lady Colonels came away with the 64-48 win.
Samford was led by Munday with 16 points and nine rebounds. Cora Beth Smith added 11 points for the Bulldogs.
EKU was led by Laura Shelton with 15 points. Cook scored 13, and Miranda Eckerle added 12 points for the Lady Colonels.
Samford will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14, when the Bulldogs play at Morehead State. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., Central Time.
