BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Samford women's golf opened the spring season with a 12th place finish out of 15 teams at the Birmingham-Southern Shootout. Kelly Stout finished tied for 32nd overall and four Samford golfers shot second-round 86's to help the Bulldogs effort.
"Overall it was a disappointing performance, but it was nice to see the steady improvement from the first round to the second," Head coach Ian Thompson said. "We have a month off and we will use that to practice hard and make sure that we are ready when the Jacksonville State tournament comes around."
Stout, Kelly Villarreal, Tricia Harlow and Jaime Hampton all shot 86 in the final round. Villarreal, Harlow and Hampton all improved on their first round scores by eight strokes or better. Stout (84-86-170) finished tied for 32nd, Villarreal finished tied for 56th (94-86-180), Harlow placed tied for 58th (95-86-181), Hampton finished in 61st (96-86-182) and Ashleigh Hicks finished tied for 65th (95-93-188).
