Softball Loses to Auburn, 4-0

Auburn, Ala. - The Samford Softball team lost to the Auburn Tigers 4-0 on Tuesday evening at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn, Ala. The Bulldogs are now 2-9 for the season, and Auburn moves to 15-3 for the season.

The Bulldogs will be in action again this weekend at the Alabama A&M tournament in Normal, Ala.

Auburn put the first run across the plate in the bottom of the third inning. Ashley Griffin led the bottom off with a double to left field. With one out, Sara Dean tripled to right field to send Griffin home.

For the Bulldogs, Jenna Dempski singled past the shortstop in the top of the fourth inning, and Liz Pearse followed with a hit to put runners on first and second with one out. But Bridgett Smith flew out to right field, and left fielder Lauren Walton made a diving catch in shallow left to end the inning and keep Samford from scoring.

Samford threatened again in the top of the fifth inning when with one out, Erin Landsburg was hit by a pitch to reach first. Erin Hall followed with a double off the wall in left field to put runners in scoring position. However Auburn pitcher Kristen Keyes struck out Kelly Smith and Shelley Stanley to end the threat.

The Tiger lead off runner Griffin led off with a single in the fifth inning, stole second and scored from second on a single by Holly Currie to put Auburn up 2-0. Auburn scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 4-0.

Sophomore pitcher Emilee Lewis got the start for the Bulldogs. She pitched six innings and allowed seven hits, four runs - three which were earned - struck out five and walked three. Her record for the season now stands at 1-3.

Currie started the game for Auburn and lasted three and one-third innings. She allowed three hits, walked one and struck out two. Keyes earned the win for Auburn. She pitched three and two-thirds innigs, allowed only one hit, no walks and struck out eight.

Four different Bulldogs had hits. Hall had her fourth double of the season. Dempski, Pearse and Smith all had singles.
