The Samford softball team split a pair of games on Sunday in Normal, Ala., at the 2004 Bulldog Classic. The Bulldogs defeated tournament host Alabama A&M, 7-2, before falling to Florida A&M University, 9-3, in the championship game of the tournament. The Bulldogs are now 4-11 for the season and went 2-2 for the weekend.
In game one, sophomore Erin Hall and senior Erin Landsburg lead the bottom of the first off with back-to-back singles. Both players later scored when freshman Jenna Dempski doubled to left center. Landsburg picked up an RBI in the second inning when Susanna Meyer scored on her single.
In the fourth inning, Kayla Watkins led the Bulldogs off with a double and scored on a single by Meyer to make the score 4-1. Samford added two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Trisha Holman singled up the middle and plated pinch runner Abi Casillo and Kelly Smith. Samford scored the seventh run of the game in the sixth inning. Kelly Smith picked up an RBI when Hall crossed the plate.
The Alabama A&M Bulldogs scored runs in the second and fifth innings.
Meyer pitched seven innings for Samford, picking up her third win of the season. Her record is now 3-3. Meyer allowed four hits and two runs - one of which was earned. She walked one and struck out five.
The Samford Bulldogs combined for 12 hits off Alabama A&M pitcher Brittany Graeber. Erin Hall, Erin Landsburg and Shelley Stanley all went two-for-three. Stanley had a double and her first triple. Kelly Smith went two-for-four with one RBI. Jenna Dempski and Trisha Holman each had a hit and two RBI. Meyer and Watkins also had hits.
In game two against the FAMU Lady Rattlers, Samford scored first in the second inning. Casillo pinch ran for Stanley who reached base on a fielding error. Casillo scored on a fielder's choice by Watkins.
The Lady Rattlers pulled ahead of the Bulldogs scoring single runs in the second and third innings and then scoring four in the fourth and three in the fifth.
The Bulldogs plated single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but three runs were not enough to top the FAMU score of nine runs.
Landsburg started the game at pitcher for the Bulldogs. She lasted four innings and took the loss for Samford. Her record is now 0-4 for the season. Landsburg allowed eight hits, six runs - five of which were earned - walked three and struck out seven. Emilee Lewis finished the game and allowed two hits, three runs, walked two and struck out five.
Erin Hall led the Bulldogs at the plate, going two-for-four with one run scored. Dempski, Holman and Bridgett Smith all had hits also.
Samford will return to action on Tuesday, March 2 against Alabama in Tuscaloosa at 7 p.m.
