The Samford women's basketball team was defeated by the Austin Peay State Lady Govs, 54-43, in Dave Aaron Arena on Saturday.
Samford (8-13, 1-9 OVC) jumped out to an early 11-4 lead with nine of the team's 11 points coming from Alex Munday. A 7-0 run by Austin Peay (15-6, 9-1 OVC) tied the score at 11-11 with 13:06 to go on a basket by Ashley Haynes. The lead went back and forth for the remainder of the half, with the largest lead being five by Austin Peay, at 23-18 with 4:24 to go. Samford then went on a 6-0 run to take a 24-23 lead on a running jumper by LaBrena Friend with 1:56 left in the half. After the Lady Govs took the lead back at 26-24, Samford answered with a three-pointer by Giovanni Price to retake the lead at 27-26 at the 1:27 mark in the opening half. APSU scored the final four points of the half to take a 30-27 lead into halftime.
The Lady Govs opened the second half with a 7-0 run to push its lead to 10 at 37-27on a basket by Kera Bergeron. A three-pointer by Price stopped the run and cut the deficit to seven at 37-30. Samford got as close as six points, twice at 39-33 and 41-35, but the Bulldogs could get no closer, as the Lady Govs came away with the 54-43 win.
Samford was led by Munday with 20 points. Price added eight for the Bulldogs.
APSU was led by Gerlonda Hardin with 16 points. Bergeron scored 12, and Haynes added 10 points and 18 rebounds.
Samford will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 12, when the Bulldogs play at Eastern Kentucky. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
