MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Samford women's tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday against Alabama State and Auburn University at Montgomery. The Bulldogs opened the morning with a 7-0 victory over Alabama State, before dropping the afternoon session to AUM 5-2.

"I think that we played great," Head Coach Terri Sisk said. "The girls played their hearts out and to have three freshmen in the lineup and to do that well I thought was excellent. We need to work on closing out games and finishing off our opponents, but that will come as the season goes on and they get some experience under their belts."

Against Alabama State, the team of Emily Nunnally and Katie Crawford did not surrender a point in an 8-0 victory. Bethany Benson and Jen Pharr accomplished the same feat winning their match 8-0 also, Sarah McKey and Emily White won their match 8-3.

In singles Nunnally won 6-3, 6-0 while McKey had no problem winning the first singles match of her college career 6-1, 6-0. Emily White, 6-1, 6-1, Christie Baker, 6-4, 6-0 and Lauren Rowland 6-1, 6-2, also all earned the first victories as a Samford Bulldog.

Against AUM, the Bulldogs won the doubles point with Nunnally and Crawford winning 8-6 and Benson and Pharr winning by default.

The Bulldogs return to the courts on Tuesday, February 10 to host Ohio Valley Conference rival Jacksonville State, the match begins at 3:00 p.m. at the Darwin C. Hardison Tennis Center.
