Samford's Trey Moody singled to center field to score Matt Alling in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Bulldog baseball team to a 5-4 win over Toledo at Joe Lee Griffin Field Sunday afternoon.
The win gives Samford (3-11) the series win, 2-1. The Bulldogs won game one, 12-8, Friday night, and Toledo (1-10) won game two, 11-9, in 11 innings on Saturday.
In Sunday's game, Toledo jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Sean Dobson grounded out to bring in Jarrod Resendez for the game's first run. Shawn Hurst later singled up the middle to score Dan Stong for a 2-0 Rocket lead.
Samford came back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Hunter Tubbs reached base on a fielder's choice, driving in Sam Stewart to make the score 2-1. Joe Denson later scored on a Toledo error to tie the game.
Toledo went back on top with a run in the third inning and another in the fourth. The run in the third was scored when Resendez scored on a Samford error. The Rockets pushed their lead to 4-2 in the fourth when Chris Arvay hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Hurst.
The Bulldogs tied the game again with two runs in the fifth inning, setting the stage for Moody's game-winning hit. The first run in the fifth was scored when Michael Collins hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Richard Bishop to make the score 4-3. Alling singled up the middle to score Justin Worthington for the tying run.
Samford was led at the plate by Moody, going 4-for-4 with an RBI. Bishop was 3-for-4 for the Bulldogs. Joseph Edens pitched the final 6.0 innings in relief of starter Parker Gargis. Edens gave up no runs on two hits to pick up the win.
For Toledo, Hurst was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Greg Gompf pitched the final inning, giving up a run on two hits to take the loss for the Rockets.
Samford will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 16, when the Bulldogs play host to Middle Tennessee in the first game of a two-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
