Volleyball Opens Spring Season with Split

March 19, 2004

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford volleyball team saw its first competition under new head coach Michelle Durban as the Bulldogs hosted Bevill State and Montevallo at Seibert Hall Friday night.

Samford defeated Bevill State behind the hitting of Kristen Berryman. Brooke Berryman and Hilary Gary each had impressive games from the middle blocker position. The Bulldogs fell in the second match to Montevallo.

"Overall, I was pleased with our effort tonight. The team did some nice things as they get used to a new system. We will return to the gym after spring break and work on improving our overall team play," said Durban after the matches.

Samford's defensive specialists Callaway Logan, Kasey Buchtien, and Eileen Hatfield had solid performances controlling the ball and allowing the Bulldogs to run their offense.

Allison Pickett handled the setting duties as she prepares to be the number one setter in the fall. Pickett had 116 assists in 16 games last season as a freshman.

The Bulldogs will have next week off for spring break and will get back to work on March 29. Samford's next competition date is April 9, when it hosts Birmingham-Southern at 5 p.m.
