CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -
The Samford softball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning of game two to defeat Chattanooga 5-1 and split a double header at Frost Stadium Monday evening.
Trisha Holman went 3-for-3 in the nightcap including an RBI-single with runners at second and third and two outs that broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning. Erin Hall followed with a two-RBI single that scored Liz Pearse and Holman. Kelly Smith then singled for her second RBI of the game to drive in Hall and make the score 5-1.
Erin Landsburg picked up the win to improve to 2-8 on the year throwing a complete game while giving up one run on five hits.
Samford (7-20) took the lead in the top of the sixth when Smith laced a double to right-center field to score Holman who had reach on a single and had been sacrificed to second.
Chattanooga (22-19) tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single by Robyn Johnson that scored Melissa Ramirez who had reached on a walk.
In the opener, the Bulldogs left 10 runners on base including the bases loaded in the fourth inning. UTC scored three times in the bottom of the third inning. Bryn Favor reached on a one-out walk in front of back-to-back singles by Jeannie Cochran and Teri Herbert to load the bases. Ramirez had a sacrifice fly to score Favor. Leslie Barron and Johnson had RBI-singles to give the Lady Mocs a 3-0 lead. Herbert added a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score 4-0.
Brittney Whittier recorded the win to improve to 8-2 and Lacy Swarthout recorded her fourth save. Swarthout took the loss in the nightcap to drop to 13-14. Susanna Meyer took the loss for Samford to drop to 4-5. Meyer went 4.1 innings giving up four runs and seven hits.
Holman went 2-for-4 and Pearse went 2-for-3 as the Bulldogs had seven hits in the opener. Samford had eight hits the game two and did not commit an error in either game.
It was the Bulldogs' first victory road victory of the season and the first win over Chattanooga since 1999.
Samford will return home for the first time since Feb. 17, on Wednesday to host Middle Tennessee at Bulldog Field. First pitch is schedule for 5 p.m.
