The Samford softball team returns home from a month-long road trip to face Middle Tennessee in a doubleheader at Bulldog Field on Wednesday. The games originally scheduled to begin a 5 p.m. have been moved up to 1 p.m.
The Bulldogs snapped a three-game losing streak by scoring four runs in the seventh inning to defeat Chattanooga 5-1 for their first road win of the season on Monday. Trisha Holman went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader including a 3-for-3 game in the nightcap with a RBI and two runs scored. Erin Landsburg picked up her second win of the season throwing 8.1 innings and giving up one run on seven hits in two games. Liz Pearse and Kelly Smith each had multiple hit games. Samford's last home game was Feb. 17, against Troy State. The Bulldogs will play seven of its next 10 games at Bulldog Field.
The Lady Raiders ended a five-game losing streak with a 6-5 victory in the second game of a doubleheader at UAB on Monday. MTSU dropped the opener 5-4. The Lady Raiders have relied on a strong offensive so far this season. MTSU is hitting .313 as a team with 18 home runs in 22 games. Cortney Mitchell is hitting .480 on the year with 11 doubles, three triples, four home runs, and 19 RBI. Brittany Herald is hitting .414 with nine doubles, a home run, and 20 RBI. Angie Huebner has a .323 average with six doubles, six home runs and 20 RBI. Pitching has been somewhat of a problem for MTSU as the staff has an ERA of 3.31. Crystal Bob is 5-7 with a 2.18 ERA. She has 82 strikeouts in 77 innings.
Samford has won the last four meetings against Middle Tennessee and holds a 6-3 advantage in the all-time series. The Bulldogs and Lady Raiders met five times during the 2001 season. Samford took both games of a double-header 3-2 and 2-0 in Birmingham and won 2-0 and 1-0 during a tournament at Georgia Southern. MTSU's last win in the series came earlier in the 2001 season when the Lady Raiders won a 4-0 game. The two teams split doubleheaders during both the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
