BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Shelly Stanley had all five RBI in two games for the Bulldogs including a three-run home run in the first inning against UAB but the Bulldogs faltered in the final inning of both games falling to Birmingham-Southern 3-2 and UAB 4-3 in the Magic City Classic on Saturday.
Samford drops to 4-16 on the season losing all four games this weekend by one run. UAB (8-9) won the tournament posting a 4-0 mark. The Blazers were down to their final strike trailing 3-1 with two outs in the top of the seventh against Samford. Beth Mullins lined a 1-2 pitch off the left field fence for a double. Holly Krazan walked in front of a three-run home run by Amanda Ellis that put UAB ahead for the only time in the game.
Samford got on the board in the first inning as Trisha Holman led off with a single and Kelly Smith reached on an error in front of Stanley's second home run of the season to straight away center field. Erin Landsburg suffered her second hard luck loss of the day throwing seven innings while giving up just four hits and striking out nine.
In game one, Samford's Susanna Meyer and Birmingham-Southern's Raquel Sanfield hooked up in an old fashion pictures duel through seven innings but in the end it was Samford's inability to field the ball that allowed BSC(7-10) to come away with a 3-2 victory in nine innings.
Meyer had a no-hitter through five and a third innings before giving up her only hit of the game to Kerri Owens in the sixth. She finished the inning and gave way to Landsburg in the seventh inning. The hit and one walk were all that Meyer allowed while striking out six. Sanfield also received a no-decision despite throwing eight innings and allowing one earned run on three hits.
Samford broke through in the top of the ninth inning with Erin Hall placed on second base. Sanfield hit Holman before giving way to Kristina Villavicenci (2-5). Villavicenci threw a wild pitch that put runners on second and third with one out. Stanley delivered a two-RBI single that put Samford up 2-0 heading to the last of the ninth.
BSC placed Owens at second base. Lillie Bradfield had an infield single on a ball that dropped between Samford's shortstop and pitcher and Leslie Roberts reached on an error by Landsburg to load the bases with no one out. Nikki Rombough and Alaina Shelton had back-to-back singles that tied the game. Landsburg got a fielder's choice and a pop up to bring up Jennifer Wellborn to the plate with the bases still loaded and two outs. Wellborn hit a ground ball to second base, Kelly Smith tripped and fell before throwing late to first base and allowing the winning run to score. Wellborn was awarded a hit on the play giving BSC four hits in the inning. The Panthers had just one hit through the first eight innings.
Samford will be off until Friday when it travels to Daytona Beach, Fla., to compete in the Buthune-Cookman tournament. The Bulldogs will face Liberty at 2 p.m. in the first game on Friday.
