The Samford women's tennis team defeated Jacksonville State 4-1 in the opening round of the Ohio Valley Conference Championships. The No. 3 Bulldogs (15-7) won both doubles matches and three-of-four singles matches in the victory over the No. 6 Gamecocks.
"Jacksonville State was ready for us today, but our girls just stepped up to the challenge," Head coach Terri Sisk said. "We need to get ready for our match tomorrow whomever we play."
In doubles on court one, Emily Nunnally and Katie Crawford won easily 8-2, and on court three Jen Pharr and Bethany Benson also won 8-2. The doubles match on court two did not finish.
Nunnally continued her dominance against OVC competition winning for the eighth time in ten tries, 6-3, 6-2, on court one. Sarah McKey, also dominating OVC competition, won 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 for her ninth OVC win in ten tries. Jen Pharr won on court five 6-3, 6-2 for the Bulldogs third singles win. The matches on courts three and six did not finish. Samford held a one set advantage in each match.
The Bulldogs will play the winner of No. 2 Tennessee Tech and No. 7 Eastern Illinois tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
