Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader From Alabama A&M

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team swept a doubleheader from Alabama A&M by scores of 7-0 and 7-4 at Joe Lee Griffin Field on Wednesday.

The first game of the doubleheader was forfeited by Alabama A&M (13-30) in the bottom of the fourth inning with Samford (12-27) leading 3-0. The game will be called a 7-0 Samford victory.

In game two, Samford jumped on top early with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Alling grounded out to second base to score Michael Collins for a 1-0 Samford lead.

Samford pushed its lead to 2-0 with a run in the second inning. Richard Bishop singled to left field to drive in Trey Moody for Samford's second run of the game.

Samford posted its third run of the game in the fifth inning when Joe Denson doubled to drive in Justin Worthington.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 7-0 with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Parker Gargis singled to right field to score Garrett Rice for a 4-0 Samford lead. Bishop then hit his seventh home run of the season, a three-run shot with Hunter Tubbs and Gargis on base.

Alabama A&M plated four runs in the top of the seventh to make the final score 7-4. Dustin Weeks hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Tyron Childress to make the score 7-1. Jeffery Wooley then singled through the left side to drive in Jason Harrison for Alabama A&M's second run of he game. Wigberto Flores scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-3, and Wooley scored on an error for the game's final run.

For Samford, Bishop was 2-for-3 with four RBI and Collins was 2-for-4. Lee Brady pitched 4.0 innings in relief, giving up no runs on just two hits to pick up the win. Michael Neimkin came on to get the final out and earn his first save of the season.

For Alabama A&M, Weeks and Wooly each drove in a run. Charles Kinder pitched 5.2 innings, giving up seven runs on 11 hits to take the loss.

Samford will return to action this weekend when the Bulldogs play host to Morehead State in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., and a single game on Sunday, also at 1:00 p.m. Saturday's first game and Sunday's game can be viewed on the internet by going to www.samfordsports.com and clicking on the broadcast information link.
