NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Samford baseball team was defeated by the 32nd-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores, 8-0, Wednesday night at Hawkins Field.
Vanderbilt (34-14) jumped on top early with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, chasing Samford (18-29) starter Parker Gargis from the mound. Warner Jones hit a three-run home run to left field with Ryan Klosterman and Mike Baxter on base for a 3-0 Commodore lead. Tony Mansolino later singled through the right side to score Bill Kleinschrodt to make the score 4-0.
The Commodores added two runs in the second inning to increase their lead to 6-0. Kleinschrodt singled to right field to drive in Baxter for the inning's first run. Mansolino singled to left field to score Jones for the six-run Vanderbilt lead.
Vanderbilt made the score 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Cesar Nicolas hit a solo home run to left field for the Commodores. The Commodores added one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final score 8-0. Kleinschrodt tripled to score Jones for the game's final run.
For Samford, Joe Denson, Gargis and Justin Worthington had one hit apiece. Gargis (0-7) pitched 0.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits to take the loss.
Vanderbilt was led at the plate by Jones, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and Kleinschrodt, going 4-for-5 with two RBI. Jeff Sues (4-0) pitched 2.0 innings without giving up a hit to pick up the win for the Commodores.
Samford will return to action on Saturday, May 15, when the Bulldogs play host to Tennessee-Martin in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader.
