Smith and Holman named to All-OVC teams
RICHMOND, Ky. -
Missed opportunities dropped Samford into the loser's bracket of the Ohio Valley Conference Softball Tournament as the Bulldogs fell 4-0 to top-seeded Eastern Kentucky on Thursday afternoon.
Samford (28-32) had its lead-off batter on in each of the first four innings but could not move her past second base. In the third inning, Shelley Stanley's deep fly ball was caught by EKU centerfielder Kelli Bromley with her back against the fence with a runner on base.
The top-seeded Colonels pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Diana Barreras walked and Bromley reached on a bunt single. They pulled off a double steal in front of a sacrifice fly by Adriel Foxley that scored Barreras. Bromley scored on a RBI-single by Jennifer Norris.
EKU (40-14) added an unearned run in the fourth as Jen Christiansen scored on a single by Bromley. In the sixth, Barreras was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a double by Foxley to make the score 4-0.
OVC Freshman of the Year, Kelsey Anderson (16-8), allowed just two hits in seven innings. She walked three and hit a batter. Erin Landsburg took the loss for the Bulldogs to fall to 12-15. She threw six innings giving up three earned runs on eight hits. She struck out one and walked four.
Trisha Holman and Bridgett Smith had Samford's two hits. The Bulldogs will face Tennessee Tech in an elimination game at 9:00 a.m. ET on Friday. EKU advances to play at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.
