RICHMOND, Ky. -
History repeated itself Friday morning as OVC Pitcher of the Year Lori Bayless shutout out Samford for the third time this season eliminating the 'Dogs from the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Softball Tournament and advancing Tennessee Tech into the 1:30 p.m. game.
Bayless allowed just two hits and worked around four walks while striking out 10 batters over seven innings. She pitched out of jams in the first and third innings but finished the game retiring 12 of the final 13 hitters. Susanna Meyer gave up just a run on four hits and struck out four but the Bulldogs could not give her any run support as she falls to 13-11 on the season.
Tennessee Tech (44-24) scored the only run of the game in the top of the third inning. Bayless reached on a bunt single and Marianne Novac reached on a fielder's choice as Samford tried to throw Bayless out at second on a bunt. Bayless was safe at second but then retired at third on another fielder's choice. With runners at first and second and two outs, Kacy Bennett came through with a single to center to score Novac.
Samford (28-33) had a runner on a second and one out in the first inning. Shelly Stanley singled to right field but was thrown out a first base taking away a scoring chance. In the third inning, the Bulldogs had runners at first and second with one out when Kelly Smith hit a deep fly ball to left field. The wind kept the ball in the park and Erin Landsburg was thrown out at third trying to tag up.
Tech advances to meet the winner of the Jacksonville State/Southeast Missouri State game. Samford's season ends with a school record 28 wins one better than last year's mark.
