BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The UAB Blazers plated nine runs in the top of the sixth inning to break open a close game on their way to a 16-4 win over the Samford baseball team at Joe Lee Griffin Field Tuesday night.
UAB (26-26) jumped on top early with two runs in the top of the second inning. Jeremy Moran singled to center field to score Cole Helms with the first run of the game. Zac Ward later hit into a double play and Moran scored on the play.
Samford (21-30) came back with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the score at 2-2. Trey Moody singled to center field to drive in Joe Denson and Matt Alling to tie the game.
The Bulldogs took the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Justin Worthington scored on a fielder's choice for the go-ahead run, and Michael Collins scored on an error for a 4-2 Samford lead.
The Blazers took the lead for good with nine runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Blazers sent 14 batters to the plate, and had eight hits in the inning. Daniel Hill drove in three runs in the inning. Hill hit a two-run home run his first time up, and then drove in his third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field. Moran drove in two runs in the inning, while Josh Miljavac, Nathan McCorkle, Seth Rollin and Eugene Rodriguez drove in a run each in the sixth.
UAB added three runs in the seventh inning and two in the eighth to make the final score 16-4.
For Samford, Denson and Collins had two hits apiece, and Moody drove in two runs for the Bulldogs. Lee Brady pitched 5.0 innings, giving up five runs on six hits to take the loss.
UAB was led by Hill, Helms and Rollin with three hits apiece. Griffin Zarbrough pitched 7.0 innings giving up two earned runs on seven hits to pick up the win for the Blazers.
Prior to the game, Samford's five seniors Brady, Denson, Collins, Eric Hollis and Karl Huch were honored.
Samford will return to action on Friday, May 21, when the Bulldogs play an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Murray State. Both games can be heard on the internet at www.samfordsports.com and the first game can be heard on the radio at WVSU-FM 91.1.
