CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Samford volleyball team (1-4) won its first match of the 2004 season Wednesday night against Chattanooga (0-2), 3-2. Samford was led by Hilary Gary with 19 kills and Angela Dempski with an attack percentage of .323.
In the first game, the Bulldogs lost to the Lady Mocs, 30-28. Samford scored the first point and managed to stay ahead by at least five points, until the Lady Mocs brought the defense after tying the game 23-23.This match remained neck-and-neck until the end as Chattanooga prevailed to be the winner (16K-10E-47TA). Samford finished the game with 17 kills, six errors and 44 attempts. Dempski finished with an attack percentage of .500, while sophomore Callaway Logan finished with four kills, no errors and six attempts with an attack percentage of .444.
The Lady Mocs dominated this game by keeping the Samford deficit at four points or more. Chattanooga finished with the win, 30-25 and recorded 16 kills, five errors and 48 attempts with an attack percentage of .229, while Samford finished with 13 kills, six errors and 37 attempts with an attack percentage of .189. Logan was the leader in the second game(5K-1E-14TA-.286Pct.).
Samford won the third game by a score of 30-22. The Bulldogs recorded 16 kills, nine blocks, five errors and 40 attempts with an attack percentage of .275. The Lady Mocs finished once again with 16 kills and a low-attack percentage of .120. Samford's Robin Bishop posted an attack percentage of .375, while senior Gary finished with 12 kills, two errors and 36 attempts.
Samford prevailed to be the winner of the fourth game by a score of 30-24. With Samford's Gary (17K-4E-48TA-.271Pct.) and Dempski (14K-5E-27TA-.333Pct.) as the leaders in this match, the Bulldogs recorded 16 kills, five errors and 47 attempts with an attack percentage of .234. Chattanooga's attack percentage dropped to .062.
For the final game, it remained close until the switch of sides with the Bulldogs behind, 7-8. As the score tied numerous times, the Bulldogs finally won their first match of the 2004 season with a final game score of 18-16 and match score of 3-2.
The Bulldogs will head to the Birmingham-Southern Invitational this weekend, Friday and Saturday, Sept, 10-11 at the Bill Battle Coliseum in Birmingham, Ala. Samford will play against host Birmingham-Southern, Troy and Gardner-Webb.
