The Samford women's basketball team placed four players in double figures, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs fell to Tennessee-Martin by a score of 66-58 at Seibert Hall on Saturday.
Samford (9-6, 2-2 OVC) was led by Cora Beth Smith with 18 points. Sarah Clement scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Veronica Pike and Tish Pilkerton added 11 points apiece.
For Tennessee-Martin (3-12, 2-2 OVC) Danielle Page led the team with 20 points. Jenny Lannom scored 12 points and Andreika Jackson scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Samford led early, jumping out to a 9-3 lead with 12:25 to go in the first half on a jumper by Smith. The Skyhawks came back to take the lead at 15-12 with 3:52 left in the half on a three-pointer by Leigh Ann Davidson. Samford cut the lead to one at 15-14 with 2:49 to go on a pair of free throws by Pike, but the Skyhawks took a 19-16 lead into halftime.
UT Martin scored the first eight points of the second half to push its lead to 11 at 27-16 with 18:01 to go in the game on a three-pointer by Page. Samford then scored eight of the next 10 points to cut the lead to five at 29-24 with 14:46 to go on a three-point play by Smith.
The Skyhawks pushed their lead back to nine points at 33-24 on a jumper by Keva Robinson with 13:39 to go in the game. Samford slowly fought its way back into the game, and tied the game at 48-48 with 5:20 to go on a free throw by Pilkerton. Samford then took the lead at 50-48 on a layup by Pike. The Skyhawks then went on a 13-1 run to take the lead back at 61-51 with 58 seconds left in the game. Samford could get no closer than six points the rest of the way as the Skyhawks pulled out the 66-58 win.
Samford will return to action on Thursday, January 20, when the Bulldogs travel to Morehead, Ky., to take on the Morehead State Lady Eagles. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
