BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University volleyball team picked up its first Ohio Valley conference win of the year with a 3-1 victory over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles at home on Saturday afternoon.
Samford (4-12, 1-3) improved to 1-3 in OVC play, with their four-game win (30-22, 15-30, 30-24, 30-26) over Tennessee Tech (4-11, 0-4).
The Bulldogs had a team attack percentage of .252, their third highest of the season. Samford also totaled 63 kills and 14 service aces. The Bulldogs showed their presence at the net, with eight team blocks. Tennessee Tech hit .243 in the match, with 49 kills. The Golden Eagles tallied seven aces and four team blocks.
Freshmen Ashley Klare and Sara Sears each tallied double-digit kills. Sears totaled 20 kills, while Klare added another 13. Sears had her highest attack percentage of the year, hitting .389 in the match. Freshman Jackie Jaszcz led the team in assists with 47. Jaszcz also added six kills and eight digs to the Bulldog effort.
"I was please with our overall performance," Samford head coach Michelle Durban said. "It was good to see Jackie Jaszcz communicating with her teammates today, which helped with our comeback after the second game."
The Bulldogs came out strong, earning a quick 30-22 victory in game one. Klare and Sears each earned five kills, while Jaszcz totaled 13 assists. Samford had an overall attack percentage of .278, with freshman Jen Powers leading the team with .750.
The Bulldogs dropped the second game 15-30. Sears had another five kills, while Jaszcz added nine assists. Tennessee Tech hit a match-high .600, with 15 kills.
Samford fought back in game three, winning 30-24 and tallying 18 kills and a .282 attack percentage. The Golden Eagles totaled 12 kills and a .167 attack percentage. Sears added five more kills, and sophomore Angela Dempski notched four kills. Jaszcz assisted in 13 kills.
The Bulldogs won the final game of the match, hitting a match-high .280 compared to Tennessee Tech's .111. Samford earned 15 kills, with Sears contributing five and Klare adding four. Jaszcz added another 12 assist to the Bulldog campaign. Dempski totaled two kills in the game, including the match winner.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, when they head to Nashville, Tenn., to take on non-conference rival Lipscomb on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
