Blue Team Wins Baseball Fall World Series

Oct. 29, 2005

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior second baseman Trey Moody delivered a clutch two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning that scored two runs and gave the Blue team a 4-3 victory in the final game of the Samford baseball Red-Blue World Series on Saturday at Homewood High School. The Blue team won the series, two games to one.

"We could not have asked for a better conclusion to our fall then these last two games and this weekend overall," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "There was an incredible turnout of family, friends, students and alumni here for this series. The guys showed a lot of intensity this weekend and really battled, we just need to make sure we carry it over to the spring."

The Blue squad jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third inning when John Morgan singled home Benji Waite, who had started the inning with a double in the gap. Mikey Marseco would later reach on an infield single, steal second and score on a sharp single by Moody.

With two runs in the fourth, the Red team tied things at 2-2. Bill Whitehead and Matt Alling started the inning with back-to-back singles and later scored on ground outs to tie the game. Alling helped put the Red team in the lead in the sixth by starting the inning with a single and scoring on a Garrett Rice double for a 3-2 advantage.

Josh Ehmke and Chandler Tidwell both delivered solid pitching performances for each team as the starters. Ehmke pitched five strong innings, striking out four, walking none and giving up one earned run, while Tidwell struck out six, walked none and also only gave up one earned run.

Doug Denson picked up the win in relief and Phillip Whitten took the loss. Whitten got two outs in the ninth inning, but he allowed the Blue team to load the bases and set the table for Moody, who finished the day with three hits and three RBI.
