Men's Golf Closes Out Fall Season With Sixth-Place Finish At Troy Invitational

Nov. 8, 2005

TROY, Ala. ---- The Samford University men's golf team ended its fall season with a sixth place finish at the Troy University Invitational. The Bulldogs were able to move up one spot, from their seventh place finish yesterday.

The Bulldogs shot a combined 13-over-par 877 to finish sixth in the 54-hole tournament. Samford shot a 294 on the day. Ohio Valley Conference rival Jacksonville State won the tournament with a combined score of 855 (-9). Two other OVC teams played in the tournament, as Eastern Kentucky finished fifth, shooting an 868 (+4) and Tennessee Tech placed eighth after shooting an 881 (+17).

"We didn't have as strong a fall as we wanted to," said Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks. "The cool thing is that the real season starts in the spring. We've got a good schedule in the spring. We now know what we need to do to get ready for that. We've got to learn how to start and how to finish. I've liked what I've seen from my freshman, and Ryan Mayberry has stepped up and is having a great senior season. Hopefully we won't peak to early, last year we peaked at exactly the right time, and I'm hoping that we'll be able to do it again."

The top two finishers from Samford were Jeremy Cox and Ryan Mayberry. Cox, who played as an individual, finished fourth after shooting a 68 on the day at the par-72 course to finish with a combined score of 209 (-7). Mayberry was the top finisher to score for Samford, placing fifth with a combined score of 211 (-5).

The Bulldogs will take the remainder of the fall off as they prepare for their spring season.
