Sophomore forward Alex Munday scored 18 points, making 8-of-10 shots from the field as the Samford women's basketball team defeated the Troy Trojans, 68-60, Friday night at Seibert Hall. The win was the fourth in a row for Samford.
"I thought overall we played well," Samford head coach Mike Morris. "Defensively, we really did a good job. I just can't say enough about our team. This was a great team effort."
Following Munday for Samford (4-1), Cora Beth Smith scored nine points, and Megan Wilderotter added eight.
Troy (3-1) was led by Laura Lee Holman with 13 points, and Amy Lewis with 11 points. Alecia Jones grabbed 13 rebounds for the Trojans.
Samford jumped out to an early 12-2 lead with 13:26 to go in the first half on a jumper by Munday. Troy then went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to three at 14-11 with 10:12 to go in the half on a three-pointer by Brandi Scott.
Samford pushed its lead back out to eight at 22-14 at the 7:42 mark in the opening period on a three-pointer by MaKenzie Spruiell. With Samford leading, 24-19, the Bulldogs went on a 9-2 run to push their lead out to 14 at 35-21 with 1:25 to go in the half on a three-pointer by Taryn Towns. Samford took a 35-23 lead into halftime.
Troy opened the second half by scoring seven of the first nine points to cut the Samford lead to seven at 37-30 with 18:01 to go in the game. With Samford leading, 43-36, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 14 at 50-36 at the 10:19 mark in the game on a pair of free throws by Karmen Smith.
Samford led by as much as 19 in the second half at 60-41 with 6:00 to go on a three-pointer by Towns. Troy then went on an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 11 at 63-52 with 2:35 to go in the game. With Samford leading, 66-52, Troy closed the game with an 8-2 run to make the final score 68-60.
Samford will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 8, when the Bulldogs open Ohio Valley Conference play against Jacksonville State. The game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Seibert Hall.
