Women's Basketball Falls To Eastern Kentucky, 63-45

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's basketball team was defeated by the Eastern Kentucky Lady Colonels, 63-45, Thursday night at Seibert Hall.

Samford (11-11, 4-7 OVC) was led by Cora Beth Smith and Che' Walker with nine points each.

For Eastern Kentucky (15-7, 10-1 OVC), Candis Cook scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Pam Garrett and Laura Shelton scored 11 points apiece for the Lady Colonels.

Samford jumped out to an early 5-2 lead with 16:19 to go in the first half on a layup by Smith. Eastern Kentucky came back to take the lead at 6-5 with 14:01 to go in the half, but Samford answered quickly to retake the lead at 8-6 on a three-pointer by Taryn Towns.

Samford pushed its lead to seven at 16-9 with 9:29 to go in the opening period on a three-pointer by Smith. EKU then went on an 8-0 run to take a 17-16 lead with 6:22 to go in the half on a layup by Cook. The teams stayed close for the remainder of the first half with EKU taking a 30-26 halftime lead.

EKU opened the second half with a 7-2 run to extend its lead to nine at 37-28 with 17:58 to go in the game on a jumper by Garrett. After a basket by Samford's Sarah Clement, EKU's Miranda Eckerle hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Colonels a 10-point lead at 40-30. The Bulldogs could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way as the Lady Colonels pulled away for the 63-45 win.

Samford will return to action on Saturday, February 12, when the Bulldogs play host to Morehead State. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off from Seibert Hall, and can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.samfordsports.com.
