The Samford softball team split the day winning game one against Alcorn State, 5-1, before dropping a 1-0 night cap to host Southeastern Louisiana at the Lion Classic on Friday.
The Bulldogs, now 2-2 for the season, will face Mississippi Valley State at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning followed by Southern University at 12:30 p.m.
Samford was held hitless in game one until sophomore Shelley Stanley singled through the right side to get things started in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman third baseman Bethany Weisser followed with a single through the left side, and sophomore first baseman Jenna Dempski launched a towering home run to left field to put the Bulldogs up 3-0. Before the inning was over freshman outfielder Emily Deaux hit her first career home run to add a run to Samford's tally.
In the fifth inning, sophomore Alicia Harris doubled to left field and crossed the plate on a hit by junior Caroline Powell to put Samford up 5-0.
The Alcorn State Braves managed to push one run across in the top of the sixth inning, but that was all the Bulldogs would allow as they went on to win 5-1.
Freshman pitcher Haley Scism earned her first career win, throwing four innings of scoreless ball. She allowed only three hits and struck out three. Junior Emilee Lewis wrapped up the game for Samford, allowing only one hit, one unearned run and striking out three in three innings of work.
In game two, the Southeastern Lady Lions went ahead by one run in the bottom of the fourth. Lion hitter Brooke Lockhart singled to get on base. Pinch runner Kelli Gautreau advanced to second on a Diane Darnley walk and to third on a wild pitch. She then scored on a sacrifice fly by Amy Ford to put Southeastern up 1-0.
The Bulldog batters had their chances to score, but could not string their hits together to send the base runners home. Stanley was 4 for 7 on the day. Three Bulldogs turned in two hits on the day. Dempski and Deaux each had two hits with one home run, and Weisser was 2 for 4 with a double.
Lewis pitched a complete game against Southeastern in the loss. She is now 0-2 for the season. She allowed only four hits in in six innings of work with one run, three walks and four strikeouts.
The Bulldogs will return to action Saturday at North Oak Park in Hammond, La., at 10:00 a.m. against Mississippi Valley State.
