Baseball Drops Rain-Shortened Home-Opener, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team fell in a rain-shortened home-opener, 5-2, to Montevallo on Wednesday at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The game was called in the top of the seventh inning due to heavy rain in the Birmingham area.

Montevallo (7-4) jumped on top early with two runs in the top of the first inning. After Blake Lewis singled to center field with one out, Brett Davis hit a home run to right field for a 2-0 Falcon lead.

Montevallo made the scored 3-0 with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Jake Wells singled down the left field line to drive in Brent Bilodeau.

Samford (1-4) put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Falcon lead to one. Justin Worthington led the inning off with a single up the middle. After Worthington moved to third on a Trey Moody single, Matt Alling flew out to left field to score Worthington. Bear Burnett then singled through the right side to drive in Moody to make the score 3-2.

The Falcons added two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Brantly Clay singled through the right side to drive in Bilodeau and Matt Gant for the game's final two runs.

For Samford, Burnett led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Chandler Tidwell pitched 5.0 innings, giving up four runs on five hits to take the loss on the mound.

Montevallo was led by Davis, going 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBI. Rusty Mask pitched 4.2 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits to pick up the win.

Samford will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 26 when the Bulldogs play host to UNC Asheville in a doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
