Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Butler

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford's Bill Whitehead singled down the left field line in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive in Bear Burnett for a 3-2 win over Butler in the second game of a doubleheader at Joe Lee Griffin Field on Saturday. Samford dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 6-3.

After falling behind 2-0 in the second game, Samford (4-11) tied the score with a run in the fifth inning and a run in the sixth. In the fifth, Whitehead singled to left field to score Trey Moody to make the score 2-1. Matt Alling singled up the middle to drive in John Morgan in the sixth inning to tie the score at 2-2.

The game, which was scheduled for seven innings, headed into extra innings tied at 2-2. Burnett singled with one out in the ninth, and then moved to second and third on wild pitches, setting the stage for Whitehead's game-winner.

For the game, Samford was led by Morgan, going 4-for-4, and Whitehead, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Burnett was also 2-for-4 for Samford. Joseph Edens (2-1) picked up the win in game two, pitching the complete game, giving up just one earned run on four hits and striking out seven batters.

Butler (3-11) was led by Matt Martino, going 2-for-4 in the second game. Matt Byzet (0-1) took the loss on the mound, pitching the final 1.1 innings, giving up a run on three hits.

In the first game, Butler jumped on top early with two runs in the top of the second inning. Stephen Gill scored the game's first run on a wild pitch. For the second run, Jonathan Day singled up the middle to drive in Joe Pauley for a 2-0 Butler lead.

Samford came back with a run in the third inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Garrett Rice singled to center field to score Morgan for Samford's first run of the game.

After Butler added a run in the top of the fifth inning, Samford plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 3-3. Alling doubled to right-center field to drive in Justin Worthington and Morgan for the tying runs.

Butler came back with three runs in the eighth inning to take the 6-3 win. Brandon Tormoehlen singled to drive in Pauley, and Tormoehlen advanced to third on a Samford error and Joe Dempsey scored on the error. Tormoehlen then scored the game's final run when Day reached base on a fielder's choice.

For game one, Samford was led by Worthington, who went 3-for-5. Rice was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Whitehead was 2-for-4. Alling drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance. Stephen Artz (0-3) took the loss for Samford, pitching 7.2 innings, giving up six runs, only two earned runs, on eight hits. Artz struck out eight batters in the game.

Butler was led in game one by Day, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Martino went 2-for-4. Jon Dages (2-0) earned the win for Butler, pitching 4.2 innings, surrendering no runs on two hits.

Samford will return to action on Sunday when the Bulldogs take on the Dayton Flyers. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
