BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford University basketball team announced the signing of highly-touted recruit Trey Montgomery to its roster for the 2005-06 season on Thursday, as the Bulldogs received an official national letter-of-intent from the versatile 6-4 guard from Destrehan, La.
"We're very excited to have a player of Trey's ability, character and academic background join our basketball program," said Samford head coach Jimmy Tillette. "Trey is a superior ball-handler with excellent vision and court awareness. His versatility will give us additional length and athleticism in our backcourt. We feel like Trey will really thrive in both our offensive and defensive schemes."
Montgomery, a First-Team All-River Parish performer at Destrehan High School, averaged 13.2 points per game throughout his prep career and also pulled down six rebounds per contest. A team captain at DHS, Montgomery tacked on 2.3 assists per game and led the Wildcats to the state playoffs as a senior.
In arguably the most talented basketball district in Louisiana, Montgomery earned First-Team All-District honors and led Destrehan High School to a 24-12 overall record. As a senior, he garnered First-Team All-6-5A honors and two of the final four teams in the Louisiana state playoffs were members of District 6-5A.
Montgomery was also a four-year member of the National Honor Society.
He will join a Samford University basketball team that has three returning starters on its 2005-06 roster and boasts eight returning lettermen, as well as talented redshirt freshman Jason Black.
