Austin Peay's Rowdy Hardy pitched a complete game shutout as the Governors' baseball team defeated Samford, 8-0, in Ohio Valley Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Austin Peay (14-10, 1-3 OVC) plated its first run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Will Hogue and Cody Youngblood started the inning with back-to-back singles. Youngblood then stole second base and Hogue scored from third base on the throw for the game's first run.
The Governors added five runs in the fifth inning to push their lead to 6-0. After three-straight singled loaded the bases, Chris Hyde singled down the right-field line to drive in Youngblood and Brett Luther for the first two runs. Jake Peterson then singled to right field to drive in Jared Walker to make the score 4-0. Hyde and Tommy Smith scored the final two runs, both on Samford errors for a six-run APSU lead.
Austin Peay added two runs in the eighth inning to make the final score 8-0. After Hogue tripled with one out, Youngblood hit a double to left-center field to drive in Hogue and make the score 7-0. Youngblood then scored on a Samford error for the game's final run.
The game marked the first time Samford (6-17, 1-3 OVC) has been shut out since May 21, 2004, when the Bulldogs fell, 3-0, in the first game of a doubleheader at Murray State.
For Samford, Justin Worthington, Garrett Rice, Parker Gargis and Trey Moody had one hit apiece. Chandler Tidwell pitched 6.0 innings, giving up four earned runs on nine hits to take the loss for Samford.
Hyde led Austin Peay at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Youngblood was 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Peterson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hardy gave up just four hits over 9.0 innings to earn the win for the Governors. He struck out six batters in the game, while walking just two batters.
Samford and Austin Peay will conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday. The first game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. Both games will be seven-inning contests.
