Baseball Drops 1-0 Decision To Georgia State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the Georgia State Panthers Wednesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Georgia State's Ryan Sterling scored on a Samford error in the top of the eighth inning for the game's lone run. Samford got its lead-off batter on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but the Bulldogs were unable to produce a run in either inning as the Panthers came away with the 1-0 win.

Samford's Scott Fowler pitched 7.0 strong innings in taking the loss. Fowler allowed just the one unearned run on five hits. He struck out five batters and walked four in the game. Michael Neimkin pitched the final 2.0 innings, surrendering just two hits, and striking out two batters.

Adam Bowling picked up the win for Georgia State. Bowling, one of five pitchers GSU used in the game, pitched one inning allowing just one walk. Brent Everett pitched the final inning to pick up the save. Everett surrendered one hit and struck out two batters.

For Samford at the plate, Chet McDonough went 2-for-3. John Morgan, Matt Alling and Drew Reagan had one hit apiece for the Bulldogs.

Georgia State was led at the plate by Rusty Bennett, going 2-for-3. Eric Suttle, Justin Newman and Nick McEntyre had one hit each.

Samford drops to 13-28 with the loss, while Georgia State improves to 21-23.

Samford will return to action on Saturday when the Bulldogs play at Morehead State in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. The teams will also play a single game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
