Birmingham-Southern's Brandon Hynick went 2-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBI in leading the BSC baseball team to a 12-1 win over Samford Tuesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Birmingham-Southern (31-17) jumped on top early with six runs in the top of the first inning. Adam Tucker singled to drive in Billy Froehlich for the game's first run. Hynick then hit his first homer of the game, a grand slam with Adam Tucker, Blake Burton and Mac Godwin on base for a 5-0 BSC lead. Scott Billak later singled to drive in Jonathan Sanford for a six-run Panther lead.
Samford (17-32) plated a run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the BSC lead to 6-1. Justin Worthington grounded out to drive in Trey Moody for Samford's lone run of the game.
BSC added two runs in the fourth inning to push its lead to 8-1. Tucker hit a two-run home run to left-center field with Froehlich on base to give the Panthers a seven-run lead.
The Panthers plated three more runs in the sixth inning to make the score 11-1. Hynick homered to center field with Froehlich and Godwin on base for the three runs. BSC then added a run in the seventh inning to push its lead to 12-1. Matt Barber scored on a Samford error to make the final score 12-1.
For the game for Samford, Trey Moody and John Morgan each went 3-for-4. Scott Fowler took the loss on the mound for Samford. Fowler pitched 1.1 innings, giving up five earned runs on eight hits. Senior Richard Bishop pitched the final 1.0 inning, allowing one hit in his collegiate pitching debut.
Samford and Birmingham-Southern will meet again Wednesday night at BSC's Scrushy-Striplin Field. The first pitch for the game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
