The Samford baseball team split an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Tennessee-Martin Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs won the second game, 8-0, after falling in game one by a score of 7-6.
Samford's record moves to 18-34 overall and 11-12 in the OVC, while Tennessee-Martin is currently 12-37 overall and 6-16 in conference play.
For the two games, Trey Moody was 5-for-7 with two RBI. Matt Alling drove in three runs in the doubleheader, while Drew Reagan and Garrett Rice drove in two runs apiece.
In game two, Stephen Artz pitched his OVC-leading seventh complete game, pitching 7.0 innings, and giving up just five hits. He struck out four batters and walked none on the day.
Samford took an early lead in game two with a run in the top of the first inning. Alling hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in John Morgan for a 1-0 Samford lead.
The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the second inning. Reagan doubled down the left-field line to drive in Moody and Parker Gargis to make the score 3-0. Chet McDonough then doubled down the left-field line to drive in Reagan for a four-run Samford lead.
Samford added a run in the third inning to make the score 5-0. Bear Burnett scored on an error for Samford's fifth run of the game.
The Bulldogs plated two more runs in the fifth inning to push their lead to 7-0. Rice grounded out to third base to drive in Alling for a 6-0 Samford lead. Samford's seventh run of the game was scored when Gargis singled to drive in Burnett. Samford made the final score 8-0 in the sixth inning when Alling singled up the middle to drive in Morgan.
In the first game, UT Martin's Nick Bruner singled to drive in Zach Dean in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Skyhawks to the 7-6 win.
With Samford trailing 6-4 in the top of the ninth, Trey Moody singled to score Bill Whitehead and Matt Alling to tie the game and set up the deciding bottom of the ninth.
Samford jumped on top first in game one with a run in the first inning and another in the second. In the first inning, Alling grounded out to second to drive in Morgan who led the inning off with a double. The run in the second inning was scored when Jeff Dils hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Moody.
Tennessee-Martin came back with a run in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Samford lead to 2-1. Scott McLean singled to right field to drive in Chris Rezabek for the Skyhawks' first run of the game.
Samford pushed its lead to 3-1 with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Morgan reached base on a fielder's choice and Moody scored on the play.
The Skyhawks plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score. Blake Turner doubled down the right-field line to drive in Nick Luper for the first run of the inning. Turner then scored on a passed ball to make the score 3-3.
Tennessee-Martin took the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. McLean singled to right field to drive in Turner for a 4-3 Skyhawk lead. The Skyhawks pushed their lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh when Zane Gresback and Zach Deen both scored on a Samford error.
Samford cut the Martin lead to 6-4 in the eighth inning when Garrett Rice led the inning off with his team-leading sixth home run of the season.
The teams will wrap up their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
