Samford's Garrett Rice went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI, and pitcher Chandler Tidwell earned a complete-game win as the Bulldog baseball team defeated the Tennessee-Martin Skyhwaks, 7-1 Sunday afternoon.
Samford (19-34, 12-12 OVC) opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Matt Alling and Bear Burnett delivered back-to-back singles with two outs. After Trey Moody walked to load the bases, Rice singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Alling and Burnett for a 2-0 Samford lead.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Skyhawks loaded the bases with no outs, but Tidwell struck out Chris Rezabek and Nick Luper, and then got Blake Turner to pop up to get out of the inning with no damage.
Tennessee-Martin (12-38, 6-17 OVC) got on the board with a run in the second inning to cut Samford's lead to 2-1. Zane Gresback grounded out to drive in Douglas Nicodemus for the Skyhawks' lone run of the game.
The Bulldogs plated two runs in the sixth inning to push their lead to 4-1. Rice doubled down the left-field line to drive in Burnett for the first run of the inning. Parker Gargis then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Moody for a three-run Samford lead.
Samford plated two more runs in the eighth inning and one in the ninth to make the final score 7-1. In the eighth inning Rice again doubled down the left-field line, driving in Burnett to make the score 5-1. Gargis then singled to drive in Rice for a 6-1 Samford lead. The game's final run was scored in the ninth inning when Moody singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Alling.
For Samford behind Rice, Burnett was 4-for-5 at the plate. Gargis drove in two runs and Moody drove in one. Tidwell pitched the complete game, giving up no earned runs on nine hits to pick up the win on the mound.
For Tennessee-Martin, Nicodemus went 3-for-4 at the plate. Scott Massey took the loss on the mound, pitching 7.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits.
Samford will return to action on Friday, May 20, when the Bulldogs play host to Murray State in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
