BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford football team will open the 2005 season on Thursday, Sept. 1 against the Edward Waters College Tigers.

Edward Waters enters the game with a record of 0-1 after a 70-12 loss at North Carolina Central Saturday night. Thursday night's game will mark the first-ever meeting between Samford and Edward Waters in football.

"They are an athletic team," Samford Head Coach Bill Gray said of his team's first foe of the 2005 season. "Up front, they have a tremendous offensive lineman that plays really well. They are athletic in the secondary, and they feel like they are going to have a team that can run the football.

"They like to put pressure on you on defense," Gray said. "So, we have to make sure we know where our checks are, and if they walk down in man, we have to make sure we know what the reads are at quarterback.

"They will be a big challenge for us, and they will also have a game under their belt," Gray said. "You always get better between your first and second game, and that will be their second game, so our hands will be full."

Samford is coming off a season in which the Bulldogs posted a record of 4-7 overall and 3-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference. EWC went 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the Southeast Atlantic Conference last season. The Tigers were the SEAC champions in 2004. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Seibert Stadium. The game can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.samfordsports.com, or www.al.com/wvsu.
