BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Jefferson Adcock and Parker Gargis each threw for two touchdowns as Samford opened the 2005 football season with a 60-7 win over the Edward Waters College Tigers Thursday night at Seibert Stadium.

The 60 points were the most points Samford has scored in a game since Nov. 14, 1987, when Samford defeated Milsaps by a score of 62-0. The win was also the fourth-straight season-opening win for Samford.

Following the game, Herman Boone, coach of the T.C. Williams Titans, portrayed in the movie, Remember the Titans, gave some inspirational words to the Samford team in the locker room.

"We are excited about the win, but we have a lot to work on," Samford Head Coach Bill Gray said. "We were able to play a lot of guys, and you're always excited about a win, but we know we still have a lot to work on."

Adcock completed 4-of-10 passes for 176 yards and Gargis was good on 6-of-8 passes for 57 yards as the two quarterbacks took turns running the offense.

Sophomore running back Drew Guess rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Justin Ray, in his first game as a running back after spending the last two seasons as a defensive back, rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Ossie Buchannon caught two passes for 107 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

After Samford (1-0) took a 2-0 lead with 13:50 to go in the first quarter on a safety, Ray scored on a three-yard run with 9:25 left in the first quarter. Shannon Fleming's extra point made the score 9-0.

The Bulldogs added to their lead when Parker Gargis hit J.T. Washington on a six-yard touchdown with 1:11 to go in the first quarter. Fleming added the PAT to increase Samford's lead to 16-0. The touchdown was Washington's first of his Samford career, and Gargis' second as a Bulldog.

Sophomore running back Guess added to the Samford lead with a 38-yard touchdown run with 14:36 to go in the second quarter. The extra point gave Samford a 23-0 lead. The run was a career long for Guess, and it was his second career touchdown at Samford.

Gargis added a rushing touchdown when he scored on an eight-yard run with 7:54 left before halftime. Fleming's PAT pushed Samford's lead to 30-0.

Gargis and Washington hooked up for their second touchdown of the night, an 11-yard pass with 3:06 to go in the first half. The PAT failed to make the score 36-0.

Adcock tossed his first touchdown pass with 1:20 left in the first half, a 36-yard pass to David Lee. With the extra point, Samford led by a score of 43-0.

Samford opened the second half with a quick score when Adcock hit Buchannon on a 63-yard pass at the 14:05 mark in the third quarter to make the score 50-0.

Samford made the score 57-0 when Ray scored his second touchdown of the day on a three-yard run with 5:38 left in the third quarter. Fleming added a 26-yard field goal with 7:51 left in the game to make the score 60-0.

Edward Waters (0-2) got on the board when Nadens Madeus scored on a 28-yard fumble return with 7:17 left in the game.

Samford will return to action when the Bulldogs travel to Waco, Texas, to take on the Baylor Bears. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
