The Samford University soccer team will attempt to continue its hot start to the 2005 season on Sunday as the Bulldogs square off against the Winthrop Eagles in a non-conference matchup beginning at noon (CDT), at Eagle Field.
Samford (4-0-1) heads into Sunday's contest riding a three-match winning streak. After earning a 1-1 draw on the road against Mississippi State on Aug. 28, the Bulldogs have reeled off consecutive victories over Memphis, 2-1, Marshall, 2-0, and NC State, 1-0.
In five matches this season, the Bulldogs' defense has only allowed a total of two goals and senior goalkeeper, Emily Morris, currently owns a stellar 0.46 goals against average. Samford has outscored its opponents, 9-2, this season.
Winthrop (2-3) enters Sunday's matchup looking to rebound from a 2-1 overtime loss on the road against Campbell. In the tough-luck defeat, the Eagles' defense deflected a corner kick into their own goal to break the tie at 4:44 into the overtime period.
Friday's loss snapped Winthrop's two-match winning streak. The Eagles entered the contest riding consecutive wins over Georgia Southern, 3-1, and Wofford, 1-0.
Samford opened the 2005 campaign against Wofford on Aug. 26, and recorded a 3-0 victory over the Terriers at Bulldog Field.
Sunday's meeting will be first between Samford and Winthrop in soccer.
