ROCK HILL, S.C. -
The Samford University soccer team played 110:00 minutes of scoreless soccer on Sunday as the Bulldogs finished in a 0-0 draw on the road against the Winthrop Eagles.
Samford's senior goalkeeper, Emily Morris, notched her third shutout of the season and tallied her second of the weekend.
"I think that both defenses and both goalkeepers played very well today," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "Winthrop's goalkeeper (Dimitra Poulos) was just on another level and she made a bunch of tough saves against us. Emily (Morris) did a great job for us in goal and she's been a key to our success this season."
Morris, who took a miniscule 0.46 goals-against average into Sunday's non-conference matchup, recorded eight saves against the Eagles and earned her second-straight shutout. On Friday, the Bulldogs' native of Memphis, Tenn., helped SU to a 1-0 victory over NC State.
With Yelton at the helm, Samford (4-0-2) holds an undefeated record in overtime contests.
Since the Bulldogs' all-time winningest skipper was named head coach in 2002, Samford owns a 7-0-9 mark in extra play. Earlier this season, the Bulldogs fought to a physical 1-1 draw on the road against Mississippi State.
"We seemed to come out and play flat in the first 20 minutes or so of the match," Yelton said. "I don't think that we played with the same amount of desire and intensity that we're used to, but I have to give a lot of credit to Winthrop. I have great respect for Coach (Melissa) Heinz and they did an outstanding job today."
Winthrop (2-3-1) goalkeeper Dimitra Poulos collected 11 saves on Sunday as each team attempted 16 shots. Poulos, a freshman from Wollongong, Australia, played all 110:00 minutes in goal for the Eagles.
Samford attempted nine corner kicks on Sunday compared to two from Winthrop. The Bulldogs' totaled 11 shots on goal and the Eagles tallied nine. SU outshot Winthrop, 10-5, in the second half.
Junior forward Sharon Young recorded four of Samford's shots on goal, while freshman Lauren Faubion notched a pair and sophomore Cassie Applegate also added one.
"I really think that Cassie (Applegate) and Lauren Faubion played extremely well for us today," said Yelton. "They gave us a big boost in the first half and their activeness energized us throughout the match. It was disappointing that we weren't able to come away with a win, but I think that their play was a bright spot for us."
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 16, as the Bulldogs host the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in a pivotal non-conference matchup beginning at 7 p.m., at Bulldog Field.
