Box Score

MOREHEAD, Ky. - After being upset by Eastern Kentucky on Friday, 1-0, the two-time Ohio Valley Conference regular-season champion Samford Bulldogs returned to form on Sunday by turning in a resounding 4-0 victory over the Morehead State Eagles at Jayne Stadium.

"We really did a good job of bouncing back and playing with a lot of energy today," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "I think that our team was as disappointed about Friday's loss as I was, and they displayed a lot of resiliency out there. Morehead State is a solid team and we really played well against them today."

With the win, Samford (6-2-2, 1-1 OVC) snapped a brief two-match losing streak on the season and remained undefeated in its all-time rivalry against Morehead State (3-5-2, 0-2 OVC). The Bulldogs hold a perfect 3-0 record versus MSU and have outscored the Eagles by a total of 8-0.

Marian Wagner, Samford's senior captain from Spring, Texas, scored the game-winning goal on Sunday and later tallied an assist. With her goal at 33:41 in the contest, Wagner moved into a two-way tie for first place on the Bulldogs' all-time scoring list.

With Wagner's three goals this season, she has upped her career mark to 25, tying her for the school-record lead with 2004 graduate Lindsay Shanks.

Also scoring goals for the Bulldogs on Sunday were freshman Candace Clippard, junior Sharon Young and sophomore Rebecca Bohler. Kim Matthews, Heather Birdsell and Bohler were all credited with assists in the contest.

Bohler and Matthews tallied one assist apiece, while Birdsell assisted on a pair of goals against Morehead State.

"We were able to score a lot of goals today, because we worked hard and played intelligently," Yelton said. "Whenever you play with a focused mindset and you do those things, then good things will happen to you and that's what happened."

Samford's highly-touted freshman goalkeeper, Cayley Winters, played all 90:00 minutes in goal on Sunday and earned her first career shutout. A native of Littleton, Colo., Winters recorded four key saves against Morehead State and improved her record to 2-1.

"Cayley did a very good job in goal for us today," said Yelton. "She was solid, but I think that our back four defenders also did a great job. They really limited Morehead State's opportunities on goal and it was really a team effort today."

The Bulldogs scored a pair of goals in each half on Sunday and outshot Morehead State, 16-8.

Clippard, a true freshman from Nashville, Tenn., scored her second goal of the 2005 campaign at the 40:50 mark in the contest. So far this season, she has attempted a total of two shots and has scored on each attempt.

The Samford University soccer team will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 30, as the Bulldogs return home to face in-state rival Jacksonville State at 7 p.m.
